How Wind Power Works

Wind power harnesses the kinetic energy of moving air to generate electricity. Modern wind turbines use aerodynamic blades to capture wind energy, which is then converted into rotational motion that drives an electrical generator. The amount of power a turbine can produce depends on wind speed, air density, and turbine design.

The power output follows the cube of wind speed - doubling wind speed increases power output by a factor of eight. This makes wind resource assessment and turbine siting critically important for maximizing energy production and economic returns.

The Power of Wind

Wind power capacity has grown exponentially, from 17 GW in 2000 to over 800 GW globally in 2023. It now provides more than 7% of the world's electricity and continues to be one of the fastest-growing renewable energy sources.
